Short Answer
> Quick answer: Visualization is the skill of seeing the position after moves that haven't been played yet. If you can find a three move tactic on a diagram but lose the thread in a real game, that's the gap. The drill that fixes it fastest is solving puzzles without moving the pieces, forcing yourself to say the full line out loud before you touch anything.
The two drills that give the most improvement per hour are calculating a puzzle to the end before playing the first move, and naming square colours at random until it's instant. Full blindfold chess is impressive and mostly a party trick for improvement purposes, since it trains a harder version of the skill than any game requires.
What Is Actually Failing
Players describe this as a memory problem, and it usually isn't. Almost nobody forgets where the pieces started. What breaks is holding an *updated* board in mind while continuing to search.
Move one in your head, and the board changes. Move two, it changes again. By move four you're calculating on a position that exists nowhere except in working memory, and working memory is small. The classic symptom is calculating a beautiful line and then playing it only to discover a piece wasn't where you thought it was three moves ago.
The second failure is the retained image. You calculate a line, decide against it, start a different line, and pieces from the first line are still sitting in the wrong squares in your mental picture. This one causes more blunders than depth does.
The third is not calculating the opponent's replies at all. Plenty of players can see their own three moves clearly and simply never picture the opponent's best answer, which isn't a visualization limit, it's a habit.
Knowing which of the three is yours matters, because the drills for them are different, and most training advice treats visualization as one undifferentiated skill.
There's a quick way to find out which one you have. Set up a puzzle, calculate the answer fully in your head, then write the line down before playing it. If the written line turns out to be legal and correct, your visualization is fine and your problem is search, meaning you're not considering enough candidate moves. If the line contains a move that turns out to be impossible, or a capture of a piece that isn't there, that's a genuine visualization failure and the drills below are the right medicine.
I ran that test on my own games after a bad month and the answer was uncomfortable. The lines were legal almost every time, which meant the board in my head was accurate and I simply wasn't looking at the opponent's best defence. That's a cheaper problem to fix than visualization, and I'd have spent weeks on the wrong drills without checking.
The No Moving Puzzle Drill
This is the highest value drill and it needs no extra tools, just discipline.
Take a tactics puzzle. Before touching anything, calculate the full solution to the end, including the opponent's best defence at every step. Then say the whole line out loud in notation. Only then play the moves.
The out loud part isn't decoration. Saying the line forces you to commit to specific squares, which is where the vagueness hides. Plenty of players think they've calculated a line when what they actually have is a feeling that it works, and speaking it exposes that immediately.
Start with puzzles you can solve, not hard ones. The point isn't finding the idea, it's holding the position steady while you check it. A three move puzzle you'd normally solve in ten seconds becomes a real exercise when you have to state the whole thing before moving.
Twenty puzzles like this beats two hundred solved by clicking around until something works, and the difference shows up in games within a couple of weeks. Square Colours and the Knight Path Drill
Two small drills that build the underlying board sense, and both take about five minutes a day.
Square colours first. Pick a square at random, say f6, and name its colour without looking. Then another. Do this until it's instant rather than calculated. It sounds trivial, and it directly speeds up things like seeing which squares a bishop can never reach and spotting light square weaknesses around a king.
Then knight paths. Pick two squares and work out the shortest knight route between them in your head, a1 to h8 for example. Knights are the hardest piece to visualize because their movement doesn't follow lines, which is exactly why knight forks are the tactic that most often gets missed.
A third one worth adding: pick a square and name every square a queen on it attacks. This builds the habit of seeing lines rather than individual squares, which is what long range calculation depends on.
I've found these work best in dead time rather than as study, walking somewhere or waiting for something, since they need no board and no screen. Five minutes a day for a few weeks is enough to change how quickly a position resolves when you look at it.
Why Full Blindfold Chess Is Overrated for Improvement
Playing a whole game without sight of the board is genuinely impressive and it's the wrong training target for almost everyone.
The reason is that a real game never asks for it. In a game you can see the current position, and the skill you need is projecting three to five moves forward from something visible. Blindfold chess asks you to hold the entire position from scratch, which is a much harder task that doesn't map onto what you actually do at the board.
It's also slow to train and frustrating enough that most people stop. Time spent failing at blindfold games is time not spent on the drills that transfer directly.
A middle version does work well though. Look at a position for thirty seconds, turn the board away, then answer questions about it. Which pieces are undefended, what does the opponent threaten, which squares can the knight reach. That trains position holding without the full memory load, and it maps onto real calculation.
The exception is if you enjoy it. Training you look forward to beats optimal training you avoid, and blindfold play does build board sense eventually. Just don't treat it as the fastest route, because it isn't.
Wiring It Into Real Games
Drills only pay off if the habit crosses over into games, and that transfer needs to be deliberate.
Calculate one line to a stop before moving, every game. A stop means a position where nothing is hanging and no capture or check remains, not just a position you feel good about. Half calculated lines are where visualization errors turn into lost pieces.
Always include the opponent's best reply. The single most common calculation error isn't depth, it's calculating your moves and their worst moves. If you catch yourself picturing a line where they cooperate, restart it.
Play longer time controls while you're building this. Ten minute games and faster reward pattern recognition and punish calculation, so they actively train the opposite habit. Review your losses specifically for visualization failures. When you find a blunder, ask whether you missed the move because you never looked at it, or because you looked and the board in your head was wrong. Those are different problems with different fixes, and only the second one is visualization. The Lichess analysis board lets you step back to the exact position and check which it was.
Expect the improvement to feel like nothing for two or three weeks and then show up as tactics you'd previously have missed. That delay is normal, and it's why most players abandon this training right before it starts working.
